Educating for Change
Mary Kim Schreck Educational Consultant
During her career as a classroom teacher, Mary Kim has spent years in most every possible teaching setting available: she taught in an all girls private academy, then in a small 270 student rural school grades six through twelve. From here she worked in a mega-sized public school of over 4,000 in three grades on a split shift schedule. Mary Kim also spent years tutoring for the St. Louis Special School District while teaching full time in another district. She later taught classes at Brown's Business College, served as a literacy coach at Vashon High School, an inner-city school in the St. Louis School District. Most of her teaching career has been spent in St. Charles County, Missouri in the Francis Howell School District where a rural school district was forced to transform into a suburban district within a few years. In the last eight years she has taught hundreds of teachers through various workshops and consulting opportunities such as an instructor for the Literacy Academies, a partnership programs between the Missouri National Writing Project and the state department of education, and instructor for the I Can Do It Beginning Teachers Assistance Program offered through the Missouri National Education Association. Currently she is fulfilling a consultant contract at North East High School in Kansas City, Missouri. Mary Kim's book, Transformers: Creative Teachers for the 21st Century was published by Corwin Press in June, 2009.
